« back to classes page
CourseGraphic This class explores the art of portrait sculpture through the integrated study of drawing, anatomy, and clay modeling. Students will begin by sketching from a live model to develop an understanding of the underlying anatomical structure of the human head and neck. These observational drawings will serve as the 2D foundation for sculpting a 3D portrait in either oil–based or water–based clay. The clay  sculpture will be life–size, including the neck and shoulders, with a height of about 15 to 20 inches. If students choose to cast their pieces after the completion of the class, a mold can be created from their clay sculpture. Emphasis will be placed not only on technical skill but also on personal voice. Students will be encouraged to incorporate individual aesthetic elements, symbolic motifs, or cultural themes into their final sculptures, transforming each portrait into a narrative work of art. The materials fee covers the live model provided for the class.
