| Every artistic idea begins with a sketch. Working in charcoal and pencil from still lifes and photos, students will increase their observational and drawing skills through sketching. Students will start with sketching simple shapes such as cones, spheres, and cubes while focusing on line quality, tonal values, and shading. Time spent on each sketch will be limited with the aim to render a brief description that captures the essential components of an image and edits out the unnecessary ones. It’s the practice all artists need as a foundation to progress towards other mediums or for just for the simple pleasure of drawing.
