| Successful paintings have a free, effortless quality. If your paintings look overworked and rigid, this class will help you achieve looseness and breathe vitality back into your work. We will study paintings that exemplify a loose quality to analyze what makes them so successful and practice techniques that will help you achieve the same qualities in your own work. These will include: preliminary sketching; blocking in with larger shapes; using larger brushes; economizing brushstrokes; moving around the painting surface to avoid overworking an area; knowing when to stop and, most importantly, gaining confidence through practice.
