Throughout the history of painting, the quick study has been a fundamental tool in developing ideas through practice. It combines the personal mark of the draughts-person with that of the painter to create a type of signature that embeds the spontaneity of drawing into a rendered painting. Exploring the methods used to create oil sketches within the framework and conventions of representational painting, students will employ the practice of the "one-off" to encourage risk-taking and the mindset that fosters open-ended problem solving. Formal demonstrations, slide presentations, and group critiques will be included.
