Encaustic is a unique medium where pigments mixed with beeswax are melted into liquid form to use as a paint. Begin by learning a brief history of encaustic and how to work safely with heat. Through demonstrations students will learn techniques in surface preparation, handling pigments, fusing layers, getting a smooth surface, mark-making with stabilios, incising, scraping, stenciling, and adding embellishments with photo transfers, pigment sticks and gold foil. Once these techniques have been practiced, students will put it all together to compose their own painting. Some materials provided.
