This course introduces students to portraiture and self-portraiture, giving them the opportunity not only to learn about photographing people in both studio settings and with location lighting, but also to discover themselves as people and photographers. Self-portraiture makes us better visual artists and photographers. It allows us to be comfortable both behind and in front of the camera, and thus, to see the world from both sides. Switching places helps us better understand our models, letting us capture them in a more powerful way.

There is beauty surrounding us if we simply pause and take notice. Each fallen leaf, abandoned toy, or empty chair has a story waiting to be told. Learn to explore the everyday 'things' and 'places' in our lives. Students will be encouraged to think less and see more, shooting objects they are drawn to intuitively. Learn to see and understanding light, how to expose for and capture it as it changes, and welcome serendipitous and unexpected mistakes. By the end, students will notice they have chosen subjects and captured photographs that come together as a cohesive body of work which begins to narrate and illustrate their story. Please bring a camera and a USB drive.
