Summer camp at the Art Center is a one-week, hands-on camp that gives middles school and high school students an in-depth studio experience. Designed to empower teen artists by engaging their creativity and building their skills, students are introduced to two forms of artistic expression each week. Small class sizes, grouped by age & experience, enable our instructors to take a deep dive with the students so that they can build technique and grow their individual style
Studio Concentrations for the week of July 9:
Functional Ceramics / Art Journaling - This ceramics class will cover hand-building, wheel throwing, and glazing techniques to teach students how to create functional ceramics items, such as cups, mugs, bowls, and plates. Given the production time-table for ceramics, it's not possible to fill 5 contiguous days with a full ceramic curriculum. So the students will also participate in Art Journaling. Art Journaling is a wonderful tool and habit for everyone. Keeping a journal that contains one's inspirations, frustrations, dreams, and fears is a way to creatively process everyday life. Students will make their own journal with simple bookbinding techniques and will fill its pages both inside and outside of class. Students will also be encouraged to share their journaling journey in class.
Drawing and Painting Techniques - This class will work on drawing and painting foundations. Students will exercise their observational skills and will gain familiarity with diverse media (such as graphite, charcoal, acrylics, and watercolors) through gesture drawings, blind contours, and contour drawing exercises. Linear perspective, color theory, and building form with light and shadow will also be covered to help students render their artistic creations.
