CourseGraphic In this class, students will dive into the principle conventions of figure painting, such as light, composition, proportion, environment, and narrative. Projects will focus on working from photographs and from direct observation. Students will gain technical proficiency with materials such as grounds and imprimaturas (underpaintings), grisaille, pigments, and color mixing to achieve realistic skin tones. The instructor will provide readings, lectures, and slide presentations that will investigate both historic and contemporary artists working with representational paintings and the figure. Students will have the opportunity to set portfolio goals that will be guided and reflected in instructions, discussions, and critiques. Please note: This class uses life (nude) models. Students under 18 years of age must have written permission from a parent or guardian to participate. Please contact studioschool@artcenternj.org for more information.
