« back to classes page
CourseGraphic Learn the basics of carving either stone or wood using tools and techniques that have been utilized for thousands of years! Direct carving is a form of sculpture in which no preparatory models are made. The artist examines the stone or wood and decides what form can be developed from it. We will discuss the history of direct carving, and participants will create a small sculpture carved in soapstone, alabaster, or wood. Students will carve with the basic point tool, toothed and flat chisels, and a hammer. We will also cover filing and finishing.
